What to Do in the First Ten Minutes
If sewage is coming back into the house, do these things before anything else:
- Stop using water. All of it. No flushing, no sinks, no showers, no laundry, no dishwasher. Every litre you send down a drain goes into a system that has nowhere to put it. This single step does more than anything else you can do.
- Keep people and pets out of the affected area. Raw sewage carries E. coli, salmonella, parasites, and viruses including hepatitis A. Children, older family members, and anyone immunocompromised should stay out entirely.
- Ventilate. Open windows. Septic gas is hydrogen sulphide and methane — unpleasant at low concentrations, harmful at high ones, and flammable.
- Do not run a sump pump into the septic system and do not add drain cleaner or additives. Neither helps, and both make the next step harder.

- If you have an alarm, do not just silence it and go back to bed. Silencing the buzzer is fine — it stops the noise, not the problem. You have roughly 12 to 24 hours of buffer, and less if the house keeps using water.
What Counts as an Emergency
A genuine emergency is a system that cannot accept any more wastewater, or one that is putting sewage somewhere it should not be. In practice:
- Sewage backing up into a basement, floor drain, tub, or toilet
- An alarm sounding on a pump-fed system or a holding tank
- Sewage surfacing outdoors — standing effluent or wet, smelly ground over the tank or leaching bed
- Strong septic smell inside the house that does not clear with ventilation
- Every drain in the house slow or gurgling at once — if it is one fixture it is plumbing, if it is all of them it is the system
- A frozen system in use, where nothing is draining and the ground is hard
- A holding tank at or near capacity with no scheduled pump-out coming
What is not an emergency: a tank that is simply due, a slow drain in one fixture, or a smell you only get outside near the bed on a hot day. Those are real problems worth solving — book a pump-out or a septic inspection and pay routine rates rather than emergency ones.
What Happens When You Call
Routine pump-outs are scheduled within 48 hours. A genuine emergency — backup, alarm, smell inside the house — gets same-day or next-morning response. We will tell you honestly which category you are in when you call, and if it is next morning we will tell you what to do overnight to keep it from getting worse.
An emergency pump-out itself takes 1 to 3 hours. If the cause was a full tank, you are back to normal the same day. If it was a failed leaching bed, root intrusion, or a collapsed baffle, pumping buys you time rather than fixing it, and we will tell you that at the time rather than after. An emergency same-day pump-out runs $400 to $800 for a typical 1,000 to 1,500 gallon tank; after-hours and weekend calls run $600 to $1,200.
The Four Emergencies We See Most
Backups
Usually a tank that is overdue, a clogged effluent filter, or a leaching bed that has stopped absorbing. The first two are fixable that day. Alarms
An alarm on a pump-fed system or holding tank means the liquid level has passed the float. Sometimes it is a failed pump, sometimes a stuck float, sometimes genuinely a full tank — and sometimes it is rain, when groundwater is getting into a system it should not be in. Odours
A smell inside the house has a short list of causes: a tank so full there is no air space for gas to vent properly, a blocked vent stack, dried-out drain traps in a room nobody uses, or a bed that has stopped taking effluent. Frozen Systems and Power Outages
Winter has its own failure modes here. Pipes and the tank inlet and outlet freeze long before the tank does, and a lightly used or recently pumped cottage system is the most vulnerable of all — a tank left nearly empty over a cold winter has no working bacteria generating heat. Thawing runs roughly $300 to $600 for pipe steaming, $250 to $500 for inlet and outlet work, and $500 to $1,500 or more if the leaching bed itself is frozen.
Extended outages are a separate problem. If your system is gravity-fed, an outage changes nothing. Cottages, Waterfront Lots, and Emergencies Nobody Is There to Notice
The hardest emergencies in this region are the ones discovered late. A cottage that lost power in a February ice storm has a pump that may or may not have survived, a bed that may have taken effluent it could not move, and nobody on site to see it. If your cottage went through a long outage, get the system checked before the first weekend of the season, not during it.
Access is the other cottage-country factor. Unplowed private lanes, spring road bans, and soft driveways all affect how fast a truck can reach you, and it is worth knowing your own access limitations before an emergency rather than during one. Waterfront lots add a second consideration: effluent surfacing near a shoreline is not just your problem, it is a lake problem, and it is the situation where getting a truck there quickly matters most.
Systems on unknown-age tanks fail without warning more often than documented ones do, for the obvious reason that nobody has been tracking their condition. If you have just taken over a property and have no history for the system, an inspection now costs a fraction of an emergency later.

01 My septic alarm is going off. How long do I have?
In most cases you have a buffer of about 12 to 24 hours before the tank reaches a critical level, but that depends entirely on how much water the household is using. Cut water use immediately — no laundry, no dishwasher, short showers — and call. The buffer is time to get help, not a free pass to wait.
02 Can I use the toilet during a septic backup?
No. Do not flush, do not run sinks, do not shower, do not run laundry. Every litre you use pushes more volume into an overloaded system and makes the backup worse. A portable camping toilet works as a short-term stopgap until the system is pumped.
03 Will homeowners insurance cover a septic backup?
It depends on your policy. Standard homeowners insurance in Ontario often excludes sewage backup unless you have added a specific sewer backup rider. Some policies cover it, some do not. Call your insurer before you need to file — and ask specifically about sewer and septic backup, not water damage generally.
04 Is septic smell inside the house dangerous?
In small amounts the hydrogen sulphide behind the rotten-egg smell is more unpleasant than dangerous. In high concentrations it causes headaches, nausea, and eye irritation, and the methane also present in septic gas is flammable. If the smell is strong and persistent, ventilate the house and get it looked at quickly rather than waiting to see if it clears.
05 Can a septic tank freeze solid?
Rare, but possible in extreme conditions. A full tank with active bacteria generates enough heat to resist freezing most winters. A nearly empty tank — one pumped late in the fall and then left at a closed cottage — is the vulnerable case, because concrete and plastic walls insulate very little on their own. Pipes, the inlet and outlet, and the leaching bed freeze long before the tank does.
06 The power is out. Will running water damage my system?
Not directly, but if you have a pump-fed system or a holding tank it accelerates how fast you reach a backup, because nothing is moving effluent out. Gravity-fed systems are unaffected by an outage. If you do not know which you have, treat the outage as a reason to cut water use until the power is back.
